Lev Grossman’s THE MAGICIANS

23 03 2010

It’s Harry Potter, Chronicles of Narnia, and The Wizard of Oz tossed into a blender with a full bottle of scotch.

It’s a bunch of socially awkward geniuses handed the keys to unimaginable power right smack in the middle of their rebellious, directionless, lets-get-wasted-and-fuck-anything-that-moves period.

It’s dark, depressing, and confusing with lead characters so pathetic and broken you can’t decide whether to pity them or slap them upside the head.

It’s disturbingly reminiscent of Craig Ferguson’s autobiography.

And for all that, it still manages to carry a message of hope and perseverance. Hats off to you, Mr. Grossman.
